It is unfortunate that there are still people unaware of the importance and vulnerability of our environment. Some may not be as concerned and alarmed in response to the ever diminishing biodiversity and the deterioration of our earth. Little did they know that biodiversity is not preserved merely to make sure future generations can know as many type of creatures as we do. Biodiversity needs to be sustained because every chain link within the ecosystem around us is indispensable to maintain balance, and their absence may create an unwanted result that is hard to trace.
To further spread awareness and knowledge regarding this issue, Sahabat Alam introduced the idea of ecotourism to young generation. On 6 July 2008, Sahabat Alam brought their friends to visit “Suaka Margasatwa Muara Angke” in North Jakarta, Indonesia. They learned a lot about endangered animals and directly interacted with 91 species of rare birds, Long-Tail-Monkey (Macaca Fascicularis), Biawak air (Varunus Salvator), Gold-Ringed Cat Snake (Boiga Dendrophila), and Buaya Muara (Crocodylus Porosus). The activity aims to introduce young generations to the delicate ecosystem in small numbers and directly experience its vulnerability all the while learning about contributions that they can pitch in to preserve the ecosystem. It is a fun way to increase knowledge among as many people as possible.
