Preserving the environment requires alteration of every part of everyone’s lifestyle. Not only managing waste and preserving biodiversity, we also need to keep our consumption in check. From the amount that we consume to the very thing that we consume should not pose as harm to our environment. Thus, terms like “organic” and “vegetarian” food becomes relevant towards conservation causes. The UN calculated that cattle and other livestock bred for their meat contributed about 18% of emission towards global level. Unsustainable farming and agriculture also destroys forests and creates non-degradable wastes. Similarly, non-organic plantation or agriculture contributes pesticide residue that will poison the entire food chain in every ecosystem it passes.
To impart such urgent issues towards more layers of society, Climate Change Seminar for IPCC 31th Plenary Session raised theme of “Vegan Organic : Way to Prosperity”. The seminar is conducted by Indonesian Ministry of Environment coordinating with Supreme Master Television Jakarta Indonesia on Thursday, 22 October 2009 at Auditorium Manggala Wanabakti, Jakarta. This seminar is not an event on its own but a complement for the IPCC 31th Plenary Session in Bali on 26-29 October 2009.
Representing young generation of Indonesia, Sahabat Alam attended the events to voice out ideas and commitments of young minds in having a more sustainable lifestyle. The only way to stop non-organic and unsustainable farming is if there is no demand for those commodities. That way, not only the environment is preserved from extra emission and toxic waste, the welfare of farmers and consumers can be improved.
