In celebration of our earth in all its resources and vulnerabilities, earth day has been an annual event celebrated around the globe. The event was meant to remind people how currently the state of our environment is deteriorating at an alarming pace and that we should do everything in our power to save our environment.
In that spirit, Sahabat Alam held Environmental Action on 22 April 2010. The event consists of planting Velvet Apple trees (Diospyros blancoi A. DC.) and installing biopores. Velvet Apple was chosen for it is one of the most endangered species in Indonesia and the high-quality wood that can be extracted from its bark. The fruit it bears, locally known as “buah mentega”, is edible and usually served as dessert. Through this event, Sahabat Alam would like to include young generations in preserving biodiversity and alleviating water scarcity problems that are prevalent around us. With this event, hopefully good habits will be perpetuated and young generations would be more interested to be involved in preservation measures.
