Indonesia’s role in climate change mitigation is enormous seeing how it is one of the countries hosting expansive area of rainforest. Furthermore, Indonesian rainforest is one of the richest in biodiversity. Very aware of the role Indonesia holds, The Ministry of Environment decided it is time for all part of Indonesian society to join mitigation efforts, including young generation. Thus, the ministry launched the program Kemah Hijau on 2006. The event is to deliver knowledge and raise awareness in younger generation in an open air setting.
The 4th annual Kemah Hijau Nasional was held in cooperation with Sahabat Alam and Taman Safari Bogor under the theme of “Biodiversity, Our Earth’s Future”. Around 245 delegations consisting of students, teachers and officials from 16 Indonesian provinces attended the event. Prof. Gusti Muhammad Hatta, the Indonesian Minister of Environment accompanied by his wife and Dr. Henry Bastaman, Deputi IV from Ministry of Environmen also attended the event and expressed their hope in their closing speeches that the event will raise awareness and increase sense of responsibility in youths over the environment they live in.
