Mangroves are an essential part of any coastal ecosystem. Their roots serve as habitats for consumable marine creatures, give stability and prevents land sinking. Seeing how beneficial they are for all creatures of nature, it should be more populous than it is now, especially on the coasts of Jakarta. While Indonesia has the largest area of mangrove forests, they are continuously lost to anthropogenic activities such as fish-farming, tourism, agriculture as well as aquaculture. Even World Bank reported that Indonesia’s mangroves were down to less than 2.4 million hectares of forests in 2015 from the initial size of 4.2 million hectares. This needs to be rectified.
This is why, Sahabat Alam in cooperation with Don Bosco Green Club of the St. Yohanes Bosco Jakarta shared knowledge about this issue towards 133 eager participants in Education of Ecology Class, a part of Educotrip.
