Awareness about environment preservation is important for everyone to have. After all, we only have one earth and everyone should pitch in in the efforts, especially younger generations. They are the ones that will inherit and continue preservation efforts. On 23 October 2008, Sahabat Alam shared essential knowledge regarding mangroves preservation with junior high school students from "SMP Islam Tugasku" at Pulamas Jaya, East Jakarta.
Mangroves forests are essential ecosystem to preserve coastal area and ensure sustainability of consumable ocean products. Mangroves become especially important for Jakarta seeing that it is the capital of Indonesia, rimmed by the sea and quite significantly reliant on fisheries. Currently, Jakarta is suffering from major coastal erosions and land subsidence, especially coastal embankments in Pantai Mutiara and Muara Angke. Thus, the preservation, if not the expansion, of mangroves forest becomes extremely urgent as their dense roots prevent erosion and subsidence of coastline embankments.
To achieve it, everyone should possess sufficient understanding about the issue as well as being involved in preservation measures. Through Environmental Presentation in SMP Islam Tugasku, Sahabat Alam wished to have recruited more young people to be more incorporated in efforts to save mangroves in Jakarta.
