Oftentimes, people sweat less about using renewable resources such as water, or living things like fishes. But it escaped their notice that if we consume more and faster than what we can regenerate, it will deplete eventually. This already happened to our fisheries. According to WWF, 32% of global fisheries are overly consumed and recovering from depletion. Worse, we will run out of fish to eat by 2048 if nothing is done to rectify the situation. Not only will we miss our seafood treat, but also the balance of marine ecosystem will be disturbed because one actor in the food chain is missing.
In an effort to increase the rate of fish regeneration, Sahabat Alam along with students from Citra Alam School at Ciganjur Indonesia breed fishes in ponds. These fishes will then be released back into the wild thus fish population will be restocked. With this event, students learn that renewable resources need careful management as much as any other resources. Furthermore, they also learn how important fishes are as a part of the food chain in marine ecosystem and were directly involved in efforts sustaining balance in marine ecosystem.
